Who Lemonade is
Lemonade launched its first policies in New York in September 2016. Its parent, Lemonade, Inc., is a public company whose stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker LMND, so it files audited annual reports with the SEC. In its 2025 annual report the company said it had passed 3 million customers.
The renters policy itself is issued by Lemonade Insurance Company (NAIC company code 16023), a licensed property and casualty insurer based at 5 Crosby Street in New York. Lemonade Insurance Agency, a licensed agency, sells the policies. Lemonade is also a public benefit corporation, a structure that matters for its Giveback program (more on that below).
On availability: Lemonade sells renters insurance in most U.S. states and Washington, D.C., and its most recent addition was Alaska on September 29, 2026. Lemonade is still adding states, so confirm yours on Lemonade’s site before you count on it.

How buying and claims work
Lemonade is built around its app and website. You answer a short set of questions, pick your limits and deductible, and the policy can start right away. You can pay monthly or annually.
Claims also start in the app. Lemonade’s annual report says its claims bot, AI Jim, takes the first notice of loss without human involvement 96% of the time, and that roughly 55% of its claims in 2025 were automated, meaning instant or near-instant processing from start to finish. Claims that need review go to Lemonade’s human claims team. Lemonade’s renters page says simple claims are handled “instantly, often in minutes.”
A fast claim experience is useful for a stolen bike or a cracked laptop. For a large loss, such as a fire that empties your apartment, any insurer will want documentation and may take longer, so keep a home inventory either way.
The Giveback. Lemonade says it takes a flat fee from premiums up front, uses the rest to pay claims, and donates what is left to causes customers choose. It does not change your coverage or your price, but some customers like the model.
What Lemonade renters insurance covers
A Lemonade renters policy includes the same core parts as most renters policies:
| Coverage | What it does |
|---|---|
| Personal property | Pays to repair or replace your belongings after covered losses like theft or fire. NerdWallet reports Lemonade pays on a replacement cost basis by default. |
| Personal liability | Helps if you are sued over an accident in your home, such as a guest’s injury. |
| Medical payments to others | Helps pay medical bills if someone is hurt at your place, regardless of fault. |
| Loss of use | Helps pay for temporary housing if your home becomes unlivable after a covered loss. |
| Extra Coverage (add-on) | Schedules valuables like jewelry, fine art, cameras, bikes and musical instruments, with a $0 deductible and coverage for accidental damage worldwide. |
| Earthquake (add-on) | Available in some states, according to Lemonade. |
NerdWallet’s September 2026 review also lists water backup, equipment breakdown, tenant water damage and tenant pet damage as add-ons whose availability varies by location. Older third-party reviews said water backup was not offered, so confirm it in your own quote if you live in a basement or ground-floor unit. Our guide to water damage coverage explains why that add-on matters.
Flood is excluded, as it is on standard renters policies. If you need it, see renters insurance and flood coverage. For a refresher on how the standard pieces fit together, read what renters insurance covers.
What Lemonade says about price
Lemonade’s renters page advertises coverage “starting from $5/mo” and says “the average cost of Lemonade renters insurance across the U.S. is around $16/month with prices starting as low as $5/month, as of 2026.” Those are Lemonade’s own published figures, not a quote. Lemonade notes that your exact premium depends on your location, coverage limits and deductible, and Insurance Journal reported that bundling, home safety devices and annual billing may lower it.
For context on what renters typically pay across carriers, see how much renters insurance costs. A low starting price is only useful if the limits match what you own, so set your personal property limit first and then compare.
Complaints and financial strength
This is where Lemonade’s record is mixed, and it is worth looking at before you buy.
- Complaints: NerdWallet, using NAIC complaint data from 2023 through 2025, rates Lemonade’s complaint level as “far more than expected” for its size in home insurance. These figures cover the homeowners line overall, not renters policies alone.
- State data: Indiana’s 2025 homeowners complaint index shows Lemonade Insurance Company with 1 complaint and an index of 2.31, compared with 0.60 for Erie Insurance Company and 1.51 for State Farm Fire and Casualty. One complaint is a small sample, so treat a single state’s figure with caution.
- Customer satisfaction: NerdWallet reports Lemonade ranked slightly below average in J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Home Insurance Study.
- Financial strength: Demotech has assigned Lemonade Insurance Company a Financial Stability Rating of A, Exceptional. Policygenius lists Lemonade as not rated by AM Best, which many carriers use, so the two ratings are not directly comparable.
Complaint data reflects how a carrier handles disputes, delays and denials, so it is a fair thing to weigh alongside price. You can look up any carrier’s record yourself through the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search or your state insurance department.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |

| Fast app-based sign-up and claims | No local agent; nearly everything runs through the app |
| Replacement cost coverage by default (per NerdWallet) | Some add-ons, including earthquake, vary by state |
| Extra Coverage for valuables with a $0 deductible | Not rated by AM Best (Demotech rating instead) |
Who Lemonade fits, and who should compare elsewhere
Lemonade may fit you if you are comfortable handling insurance on your phone, want coverage started today, own valuables like a bike or camera that you want on Extra Coverage, and like the idea of the Giveback.
Compare other carriers first if you want a local agent, you plan to bundle with an auto policy from a carrier that offers it at your address, you put a high weight on complaint records, or you need flood or other coverage Lemonade does not offer where you live.
